al-Mudd al-Nabawwiyya

Mudd and sa` were units of measurement for volume used by our Beloved Prophet ﷺ, similar to today’s liters and gallons. One mudd is the equivalent of 775 ml. and one sa` is 4 mudds (according to the opinion of the majority of scholars).

Mudd is an Arabic word, and not the material "mud" in English.

The blessed sayings of the Prophet Sayyiduna Muhammad concerning the measure al-mudd:

The Prophet ﷺ, would perform ablution with one mudd, and would perform a ritual bath with one sa`. (Bukhari and Muslim)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform wudu with a mudd and he would perform ghusl with a sa`.  (Tirmidhi)

Allah's Messenger ﷺ said, "O Allah bestow your blessings on their measures, bless their mudd and sa`." (meaning the people of Madina). (Bukhari)

Our Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practice it, will have the same reward of those who practice it without their reward diminishing" (Sunan ibn Majah).

Our Prophet ﷺ supplicated for the mudd stating:

"Oh Allah bless us in our fruits, bless us in our city, bless us in our sa`, and bless us in our mudd"

(Muslim, Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi, Muwatta Malik

The engraving on the measuring cup contains the sanad for the Hadith that praises the mudd. Please therefore, respect the sanctity of the product and use it for clean tasks, such as wudu outside of bathroom, drinking water or measuring purposes of rice, flour, and etc.

- Copper: Do not use regular soaps to clean copper. Use a blend of 3 parts Baking Soda and 1 part Vinegar to create a paste. Using a wet sponge or cloth then apply the paste on the copper mug and let it sit. Finally, scrub, hand wash and rinse with a soft sponge and clean water to remove tarnish and the cleaning paste.
