Prophetic Mudd Cup (المد النبوي)
al-Mudd al-Nabawwiyya ﷺ
Mudd and sa` were units of measurement for volume used by our Beloved Prophet ﷺ, similar to today’s liters and gallons. One mudd is the equivalent of 775 ml. and one sa` is 4 mudds (according to the opinion of the majority of scholars).
Mudd is an Arabic word, and not the material "mud" in English.
The blessed sayings of the Prophet Sayyiduna Muhammad ﷺ concerning the measure al-mudd:
The Prophet ﷺ, would perform ablution with one mudd, and would perform a ritual bath with one sa`. (Bukhari and Muslim)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform wudu with a mudd and he would perform ghusl with a sa`. (Tirmidhi)
Allah's Messenger ﷺ said, "O Allah bestow your blessings on their measures, bless their mudd and sa`." (meaning the people of Madina). (Bukhari)
Our Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practice it, will have the same reward of those who practice it without their reward diminishing" (Sunan ibn Majah).
Our Prophet ﷺ supplicated for the mudd stating:
"Oh Allah bless us in our fruits, bless us in our city, bless us in our sa`, and bless us in our mudd"
(Muslim, Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi, Muwatta Malik)
